The legislature has encouraged Dutch universities to stop recruiting international students

December 2, 2022 at 4:22 pm, No comments
To lessen the burden on housing and university facilities, the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) wants Dutch universities to stop actively seeking out international students.

Dutch universities struggle to accommodate the growing student population

According to data released earlier this year by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 40% of first-year students enrolling in Dutch universities during the 2021–2022 academic year were foreign students. The number of foreign students enrolled in Dutch universities has nearly doubled during 2005/2006.

Members of parliament are calling on higher education institutions to stop actively recruiting students from abroad in the hopes that this will lessen the influx of internationals as universities struggle to keep up with the rapidly rising numbers - lecture halls aren't big enough to accommodate all the students, and the housing shortage leaves internationals without anywhere to live.

Robbert Dijkgraaf, the minister of education, culture, and science, has promised to offer a strategy to address the problem in February, but the parliament demands action now. They want Dutch universities to stop participating in university and career fairs overseas and stop advertising to potential students abroad.

According to SP member Peter Kwint, "there is simply not enough capacity." "Those international students have no choice but to pay a lot of rent or sleep
