Are you a freelancer? Hard times are coming in the Netherlands

September 1, 2022 at 1:15 pm, 9 comments
The national statistics agency CBS said on Thursday that a total of 76,000 businesses closed their doors in the first half of the year, the largest amount since records began in 2007. Around 84% of the businesses that failed were founded by freelancers, indicating that they may have found permanent employment or had given up.

According to Marjolijn Jaarsma, a CBS economist, "a lot of coaches, physiotherapists, and aesthetic professionals start and then stop." According to the statistics, several webstores also shut down, and the number of eateries closing their doors increased significantly.

The bankruptcy rate has slightly increased, although it is still quite low, according to the CBS. The government's coronavirus assistance package, which let businesses to postpone making tax payments, is one explanation for this.

When the deferral deadline passed, the CBS had previously stated that it anticipated a wave of bankruptcies, but this has not happened. In the first half of the year, 961 businesses in total went out of business, 139 of which were managed by independent contractors.
